Three Bali Favourites from DULi Founder Thijs

Whenever he travels, Thijs loves discovering plant-based food. On a recent visit to Bali, three dishes stayed with him. Here are his notes.

In Ubud, I visited the plant-based restaurant Moksa Ubud. Its Lemongrass Coconut Mushroom soup was remarkable. The rich, creamy coconut broth was the secret to a dish I could not forget.

At Cuca in Jimbaran, I found Roasted Vegetable Buns that reminded me of DULi’s corn and cauliflower bao. Colourful and delicious, they were filled with barbecued aubergine.

Finally, a small restaurant called Thai Street Food, tucked into a shopping mall basement, surprised me with its Pad Ka Pao. Stir-fried vegetables and tofu with rice: complete comfort food. I almost hate to admit it, but I enjoyed it even more than our Sichuan vegetable stir-fry. The basil, chilli oil and Kao Pad sauce were a wonderful combination.

The last two places are not vegetarian restaurants, yet I found some of my favourite plant-based dishes there. If you have the chance, take a look. Here are the details recorded at the time of the trip.

Moksa Ubud — Ubud II Kutuh, Jl. Puskesmas, Sayan, Kecamatan Ubud, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80571, Indonesia. Recommended dish: Lemongrass Coconut Mushroom.

Cuca Restaurant — Jl. Yoga Perkanthi, Jimbaran, Kec. Kuta Sel., Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80364, Indonesia. Recommended dish: Roasted Vegetable Buns.

Thai Street Food — lower-ground floor, Lippo Mall Kuta, Jl. Kartika Plaza, Kuta, Kec. Kuta, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80361, Indonesia. Recommended dish: Pad Ka Pao with tofu.
